Trouble With Oil

January 24, 2007

An article by Emma Davy, states that the world oil supply is descending and we are not nearly prepared to take on such challenge. There is only an (estimated) amount of 2.6 trillion barrels of pure crude oil left in our earth’s ground. Though it sounds like a lot, our world would need much more in order to be a place were oil is the base substance of most products, especially gas. Expert, M. King Hubbert concluded an estimate saying that the oil supply will peak in 2030. Now that is not a lot of time to figure out a replacement for oil. Scientists have put their heads together to figure out different alternatives to using oil. They are not only finding alternatives but they are trying more natural methods to create energy that usually uses oil. For example, Scientists have invented a cool new kind
of car called the MiniCat. They say that it is the world’s cleanest car. Believe it or not this amazing machine runs on compressed air! Wile all this is going on, we have found a kind of rock called oil shale. If put in a kiln, this rock will bleed out oil. Though it is a great way to get oil it is a very expensive process and will not help very much in getting the amount of oil that we are longing fore. Because of all the panic, Saudi Arabia is a main oil target. Most of the world’s oil is exported from Saudi Arabia. At some point in time the oil supply will peak and there will be nothing to cling on to. The Scientists are working very heard but we also need to chip in and use some other methods besides oil. Can we handle it or not?

In Social Studies Today…

January 18, 2007

Today in Social Studies we mostly corrected our Saudi Arabia study guides. Though we were just correcting, Mr. Hetherington let us write the answers on the new smart board. After finding the answers to each question we talked about them in great detail. Mostly everyone contributed to the discussions. Because we were mostly talking about the oil supply in S. Arabia, Mr. Hetherington showed us all different sorts of charts that showed the prices of gas that had bin raised and lowered according to the point in time that we were in. For example, if there was some sort of crisis the prices would go up. Tomorrow we will be taking a little quiz on Saudi Arabia. Good Luck!

Here are the Smartboard notes from today’s class

Letter From Turky

January 9, 2007

Dear Devon,
I think Kamel Ataturk is a great person. He is especially good to us women because he has given us a lot of freedom. Kemal changed the laws and let us finally take off our veils and show our faces. I am also now able to go to school! I would usually have to stay home and help my mother. My mother told me she has been informed that she is now able to vote! At last my mom and I feel equal with men. Most men are not happy with the new laws because they don’t have as much power over the women as they use to. They are not only mad because of those new laws but Kamel has ordered them not to wear fezzes (religious caps) any longer. Things are getting quite confusing but I am still satisfied. I can’t wait to hear from you.
Love,
Emily K.

Science

December 20, 2006

In science today, the people who needed to, worked on finishing our bean projects and our notebooks. If you were finished, you had the choice of taking an extra credit test, which was on our unit. If you got over a 75 you would get extra point on your unit. The bean project and the notebook were due today.

Ruby

December 12, 2006

Ruby was my kitten. I loved her soooo much. She would always try to play with me wether I wanted to or not. When I would do my homework she would fuss around with my hair and when she was done she would use my body as a ramp to get down (what a silly goose). When it was time for bed I would carry her upstares and place her on my bed. As I lay down, she would snuggle up to me and play around with my fingers until I turned off the light. As soon as the light went off, she would doze off to sleep.

I would bring Ruby everywhere (including trick-or-treating and to church) with me like she was my baby. I would show her off to everyone . Eventually she became known by everyone and she was very popular. Never had anyone seen a kitten so cute and well-behaved.

Two weeks ago I came home from the mall with my parents and visited the new nabors. After showing them around the neighborhood I wanted to show them the famous RUBY. I whent inside to get her. When I asked my father if he had seen her he answered ”yes” . ”Well then were is she?” I asked. He said in a low tone that she had been ran over by our car and that she is dead now!! I of course thought that it was a joke but when he promised that it was true I started to holler and cry in a loud tone. I was left alone in the garage doing this for about ten minutes until I got the courage to tell my neighbors. They were very supportive and then went home. I went across the street to my best friend’s house, who had already been informed. We both cried for an hour while his mom tried to cheer us both up. She took us to stop and shop to get some goodies. We went home and made ice cream to distract me. Later I went home and went to bed.

Three days later, my mother surprised me with a little black kitten!! I wasn’t quite ready but she said we weren’t sure if we will keep it. She just wanted to show me that there are other kittens in the world that need my love. The next morning I woke up and the kitten was lying next to me very sick! My mom took it to the hospital. When I came home and asked my mother if the kitten was still alive she answered no.

Lybia

December 6, 2006

Libya is a country that can be described with one word, desert. It goes without rivers and you could not spot an oasis within miles. The only way that Libyans can get fresh water is by pumping it out of the aquifers, which are underground rock layers that hold large amounts of fresh water. Libya holds great amounts of oil. They sell this oil so they can earn money to import food. Muammar al-Qaddhafi has been Libya’s all-powerful dictator. Sadly he was involved in some horrible terrorist acts. One of these acts was the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pam Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. I think that you would agree with me when I say that Libya has a very tough history behind it.
